IFSC code Indian Financial System Code
An IFSC code is an 11-character code that identifies a single bank branch in India, and it is required to pay money into an Indian bank account.
The code is made of the bank's four-letter code, a zero, and a six-character branch identifier — for example HDFC0001234. The zero in the fifth position is reserved, and it is always a zero, never the letter O.
A recipient finds their IFSC on their chequebook, on their passbook, or in their banking app under account details. It identifies the branch, not the person, so everyone banking at that branch shares it.
You do not need an IFSC to send money to a UPI ID. The UPI ID already resolves to an account, and the routing happens on the Indian side.
